ARMA 3

Introduction

The first time I played ARMA 3 for any length of time, I learned very quickly that you shouldn’t leap into a firefight with abandon and expect the best outcome. A few moments of deliberate action, watching the landscape, and maintaining situational awareness of your squad can make a huge difference over a big gun alone. That slower tempo is what makes the game sticky. You can hit a firefight like a freight train, and things will still be off-kilter.

What ARMA 3 Brings to PC

ARMA 3 is a sandbox military game from Bohemia Interactive that features first-person combat, vehicles, large scale environments, tactical gameplay and a huge range of user generated content. Instead of forcing you into one specific gameplay style, the game offers a huge range of options: infantry combat, armored warfare, helicopter insertions, reconnaissance, multiplayer warfare, and more.

These battles are set on vast open-world terrains, totaling over 610 square kilometers. You can traverse these regions on foot and by using the broad range of land, air, and water-based vehicles at your disposal. And then some: the single-player component offers a variety of campaigns, scenarios, showcases, challenges and more, while multiplayer extends the package with Bohemia Interactive and community-designed cooperative and competitive gameplay.

How the Battlefield Works

Combat is not like other average run-and-gun shooters in ARMA 3. How you sit, what you see, and communication all play a role. You could spend a mission planning things out at the loading bay, choosing your gear, observing the terrain, and figuring out how your team will take on a target. During a mission, you are free to do what you want – command your team, be in the infantry, or cover from afar.

In the open the sightlines can be massive, and thick vegetation can hide bodies in the weeds while your foes’ structures can be used as strategic points of defense. Vehicles will also alter the scope of an operation, allowing players to rally units, offer supporting fire, or flank the enemy. And, of course, there’s Zeus.

In Zeus multiplayer matches, a Game Master can alter the fight as it’s happening, putting players in fresh situations in every match. That one system is another reason ARMA 3 can tell stories that don’t seem like standard scripted missions. The Eden Editor takes that notion further by letting players build their own scenarios.

Why the Sandbox Makes a Difference

The best part about ARMA 3 is that there is no suggested way of playing. You can play it safe with a single soldier, synchronise an entire squad for an attack, scope out a location before you engage, or hop into a hummer and act as a sniper on the move. That freedom is very daunting to begin with, but that same complexity is also ARMA 3’s biggest selling point when you get to grips with the controls. A mission can play out in dozens of ways because the world, the AI, the vehicles, the teammates and the mission objectives all influence it.

The equipment variety is also a big factor. New weapons and vehicles are not simply visual upgrades, they alter your strategy for the fight. Perhaps you’ll deploy a helicopter to insert a team behind enemy lines. Perhaps you’ll drive an armored vehicle to a defensible position. Or perhaps you’ll stick with an infantry team and advance through the town sensibly and deliberately. There isn’t always a clear-cut best option. The multiplayer side of things is another huge aspect of the experience. -Steam Workshop offers a vast array of user-made items, from simple equipment kits to new scenarios and vastly different multiplayer game types.

Final Thoughts

ARMA 3 is not a game to rush. Which is pretty alright. If you come to terms with every motion you make affects you in some way, the game becomes way more forgiving. An uneventful patrol can turn hectic in the blink of an eye. And all because the best choice, for a while, can be just to stay still and wait.

I believe this is the personality of ARMA 3. It provides you with such a massive military sandbox and then sets a lot of room for you or your squad or the community to determine what happens within it. The paid campaigns hold up the structure, multiplayer offers the sandbox randomness and the editor and Workshop offer up the endless potential for stuff well beyond what they are officially providing. Frankly, there’s a satisfying quality to completing an operation that takes more than just blazing reflexes.

ARMA 3 has plenty of space to experiment and try things out, whether you’re into tactical shooters, military simulations, large multiplayer combat, vehicle combat or just making your own scenarios, you may play one session as the leader of an infantry unit and another trying out a radically different mission with friends. You get the point, the battlefield is your oyster.
